Did you know the world's leading plastic polluter is a household name in fizzy drinks with a iconic red logo? It's Coca-Cola.
According to the nonprofit Break Free From Plastic, Coca-Cola has held the top spot as the planet's biggest plastic polluter for the third year running. Pepsi and Nestlé follow closely behind.
Not only is sugary soda a health concern, but Coca-Cola's plastic footprint makes it the most polluting company globally in this category. Here's why:
Contents Beyond the sheer volume of plastic waste, Break Free From Plastic highlights the companies' near-zero progress in reducing plastic use, as reported by RTL.
"These top polluters are failing their weak commitments and increasingly relying on greenwashing to create an illusion of sustainability," the NGO states.
In essence, they publicize environmental initiatives aggressively, but meaningful actions lag far behind.
Coca-Cola, Pepsi, and Nestlé pledged in 2018 via the Ellen MacArthur Foundation to curb plastic use in packaging.
Yet, data from the Foundation shows these giants reduced virgin plastic by a mere 0.1% from 2018 to 2019—far short of their ambitions.
Other major offenders include Unilever, Mondelēz International, Mars, Procter & Gamble, and Colgate-Palmolive.
With such slow change, consumers may consider healthier, homemade alternatives to reduce personal impact.
